Maria works primarily with cherry and bass wood and leather, supported by custom-milled components for articulation. Each piece is finished with Natural Pigment oil paints or Talens watercolors to achieve subtle, lifelike tone and depth.
Each sculpture begins with a digital model, followed by CNC-milled parts that Maria hand-shapes, assembles, and refines. The process involves carving, sanding, leather manipulation, and repeated adjustments to ensure natural movement and structural stability.
Timelines vary, but most sculptures require several months from initial design to final finishing. Complex articulation, expressive head positions, and repeated reshaping can extend the process.
Poses are accomplished by human hand to manipulate the articulated joints into different positions. Photos on each sculpture’s page show the range of possible positions.
